Preserving History While Delivering Modern Performance
When the historic Charterhouse in London sought to upgrade its main kitchen facilities, the challenge was more than just technical — it was architectural, regulatory, and deeply sensitive to the site’s legacy. As a Grade I Listed building with origins dating back to the 14th century, any modernisation efforts had to respect the historic structure while meeting today’s exacting safety and performance standards.
df20, the specialist catering designer and distributor leading the project, turned to Kitchen Vent Technical Ltd (KVT) to develop a sympathetic, safe, and visually discreet bespoke kitchen ventilation system.
KVT’s Tailored Ventilation System for a Historic Space
KVT began with an in-depth site survey and design brief, meticulously planning a route to carry extract ducting across three levels of the building — all while protecting the architectural integrity and aesthetic of the Charterhouse.
The solution included:
- Three-hour fire-rated and insulated ductwork
- Automatic fire suppression systems
- Discreet intake and discharge terminals, preserving the building’s exterior appearance
- Centrifugal fans with high power but low noise output
- A fully integrated control panel combining:
- Fan speed regulation
- Heating interface
- Gas interlock
- Safety monitoring — all within a compact cabinet
To ensure occupant comfort year-round, the return air supply was tempered using a large electric heater battery, and noise attenuation was seamlessly incorporated throughout the design.
Why KVT Was the Right Fit
- Ability to coordinate across trades and maintain progress despite Covid-19 lockdown restrictions and even during on-site filming of a major TV series
- Delivered a fully integrated controls package, simplifying day-to-day operation for the kitchen team
- Installed a main island canopy and matching Services Distribution Unit, built to the highest standards and compliant with DW172, DW144, and TR19
- Maintained all safety and aesthetic requirements within a tight budget
